THE NSW Government will introduce new legislation aimed at fast-tracking critical renewable energy projects as coal-fired power stations retire. The proposed law will allow the Energy Minister to identify and prioritise key renewable generation, storage and network projects for streamlined approvals. Environmental, planning and community consultation requirements will remain in place, with projects expected to demonstrate best-practice engagement with regional communities and landholders. Renewable energy currently supplies about 36 per cent of NSW electricity, with summer periods exceeding 80 per cent renewable supply. The reforms will also strengthen community benefit-sharing arrangements, with more than $180 million already committed to host communities since late 2024.
