The Attorney-General spoke with Their Majesties about the deep ties between Australia and Tonga, including the thriving Tongan community, many of whom live in Western Sydney.
Australia and Tonga also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cyber Cooperation to support the two countries to protect national security, manage cyber threats and harness emerging technologies.
During their Majesties’ visit, His Majesty recognised Tongans and Australians who have supported national recovery efforts following the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption in January 2022 and have contributed to the strengthening of the Tonga-Australia bilateral relationship.
On Sunday, the Tongan diaspora travelled from around the country to attend a church service in Sydney, led by Reverend Charissa Suli, a daughter of Tongan immigrants who became President of the Uniting Church in Australia last year.
Her Majesty also lent her support to Australian researchers in the fight against cervical cancer.
Their Majesties’ visit to Australia demonstrates the importance of our bilateral relationship and depth of the cultural and personal connections between our two countries spanning 200 years.
Ms Rowland said: “Last week I had the great pleasure and honour of meeting His Majesty King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u of Tonga.
“I spoke to Their Majesties about the deep bonds that exist between our two nations,exemplified by the thriving Tongan community in Australia.
“The Tongan diaspora here in Western Sydney is a vital part of our community and we look forward to further strengthening our relationship with Tonga.
“I wish Their Majesties a pleasant and memorable visit to Australia.”
