GOVT CONSIDERS NEW MAJOR FILM STUDIO

Blacktown loctions among options
THE NSW government is considering Western Sydney as the potential location for a second major film studio to help meet growing demand from local and international productions.

The project forms part of a broader effort to expand the state’s screen industry and relieve pressure on existing facilities, with Disney Studios Australia at Moore Park currently the only major studio complex in Sydney.

Three government-owned sites in Western Sydney—Bungarribee, Eastern Creek and Prospect—have been identified as possible locations, although other proposals could also be considered if suitable land and partners are available.

The NSW government has committed $100M to support the development of the new studio and has launched an expression-of-interest process to find an industry partner capable of delivering a large facility with at least six sound stages.

Officials say the studio would help attract major international productions while strengthening the local film and television sector, creating jobs and investment across the screen industry supply chain.

Producers and industry leaders have welcomed the proposal, arguing that Sydney urgently needs more production space as global streaming and film projects continue to grow.

If approved, the studio could position Western Sydney as a significant hub for screen production in Australia.
