BABIES GALORE AT SYDNEY ZOO

Meerkat pups, a capybara and a hyenna
BLACKTOWN News has tracked the latest additions at the impressive Sydney Zoo at Eastern Creek.

The popular zoo is home to hundreds of endangered and rare native and exotic animals, and we can tell you there’s a marvelous baby boom happening there.

Recently born were three Meerkat pups, a baby Capybara, a playful Hyena cub, and a mischievous baby Capuchin.

Sydney Zoo said they are “celebrating a baby boom” this month and has invited visitors to come and watch first-hand how these baby animals are growing each day.

Born to first-time parents Kamili and Uzuri, the three baby meerkats were the recent newborns weighing from a tiny 25 to 28 grams at their birth.

Last week, the scales weighed them between 170 to 180 grams each and growing healthily at an average 10 grams every few days, according to Sydney Zoo.

“Their growth progress is a testament to the attentive care provided by their doting parents,” Sydney Zoo said.

The CCTV footage that captured the extraordinary births of each of these baby animals can be watched by visiting the Sydney Zoo website.

At night, these newborns stay warm by creating a cuddle puddle in their nest box, displaying the close bond they have with one another and their parents.

The meerkat pups were born blind, according to Sydney Zoo, then they begin to open their eyes from eight to 10 days old seeing their surroundings and their parents for the first time.

“As they continue to develop, the pups have eagerly embraced solid food alongside their mother's milk, demonstrating their growing independence with each passing day,” Sydney Zoo said.

These baby animals will soon get their names, but the meerkat pups have been given theirs according to their own unique personalities.

The baby male meerkat was named Maputo, “emerging as the largest and most confident of the litter, and fearlessly exploring his surroundings,” Sydney Zoo said.

“The two females named Kigali and Nairobi are equally endearing and can often be seen sticking close to one of the adults as they venture out of the nest box.”

These newborns are surely taking visitors’ breath away as they playfully show what’s it like to putter around in their protective home at the zoo.
