THE Geographical Names Board (GNB) is requesting community feedback on a proposal by Blacktown City Council to name a reserve in Schofields as Galungara Park.
The name Galungara is derived from the Dharug language and is also the name of the adjacent public school. The park, spanning 10 hectares, is situated between Farmland Drive and Jerralong Drive.
The name Galungara references the Grass Tree, a significant tree in Aboriginal Dreaming, and translates to "the stem or the flower stalk" of the Grass Tree.
The GNB seeks community sentiment on the proposed name and is not currently accepting alternative name suggestions.
Feedback can be submitted online or through written submissions until May 21, 2023.
Chair of the GNB, Narelle Underwood, emphasizes the importance of place naming in preserving traditions and fostering a sense of belonging.
